Iloilo City.- An upset loss for Ateneo Team B after being shocked by the newcomer CenterPhil Junior Knights, the elementary varsity basketball team of CenterPhil Montessori based in Janiuay, Iloilo, at the opening tip off of the Milo Best – Small Basketeers of the Philippines Tournament last Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School Gym, Ledesco Village, Jaro, Iloilo City.
A low scoring turn-out match because of impenetrable defense on both teams and an exciting and boisterous opening game at the jampacked ICCHS Gym full of parents of the participating teams, the taller and bigger Ateneo was leading with a score of 27 against CenterPhil’s 20 in the fourth quarter when a late rally was made by CenterPhil Junior Knights courtesy of starplayer James Yap, a grade 6 CenterPhil student who hails from Mina, Iloilo, making the score closer at 27-24 with a minute left. With 26 seconds remaining in the last quarter, a crucial lay-up shot was made by Nicko Limas, a grade five student of CenterPhil who resides from Lambunao, making it a one point lead for Ateneo at 27-26. With eight seconds left, Ateneo was charged with an intentional and unsportsmanlike foul by the referee for fouling CenterPhil starplayer James Yap who has the ball after a drive, awarding him two free throws plus ball possession for CenterPhil. Yap scored the two crucial free throws for the win at 28-27 in favor of CenterPhil.
Yap’s heroics during the game catched the eyes of Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School scouts and alumni officers, offering him a high school scholarship which may include free board and lodging for the next school year. An Integrated Meet Basketball Player, Yap represented the 3rd Congressional District in elementary basketball to the Iloilo Integrated Meet last school year. The Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School is the school where his namesake Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) MVP James Yap (of Purefoods) and PBA player Ken Bono (of the Burger King Whoppers) finished there High School education as sports scholars. CenterPhil is still studying the offer on Yap as of press time whether to match the offer sheet for its CenterPhil High School Knights Varsity Basketball Team next school year or to let go of its discovery starplayer.
Mostly participated by big universities and schools from highly urbanized cities, Milo Best – Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) is the only elite league for small basketeers in the country. CenterPhil is the only school in the Province of Iloilo who holds an eligibility in joining the Milo Best – SBP Tournament.
Players of the Game: James Yap and Nicko Limas
The next game of CenterPhil Junior Knights (Elementary Varsity Basketball Team) will be on Saturday, September 12, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at the Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School Gym, Ledesco Village, Jaro, Iloilo City against the Children’s Integrated School of Alta Tiera (CISAT).
