ERROR IN BOOK OF DR. LUIS CAMARA DERY ?
DID CABATUANANONS REPOPULATE SANTA BARBARA, ILOILO ?
On page 104 of the book "The Kris in Philippine History" written by
Luis Camara Dery, and published in 1997, it states that:
"IN ILOILO, THE COLONIAL AUTHORITIES ENCOURAGED THE INHABITANTS OF XARO (now called Jaro) AND CABATUAN TO RESETTLE THE ABANDONED TOWN OF CATMON, DESTROYED IN THE EARLY 1750'S.
IN 1767, IT BECAME THE VISITA DE SANTA BARBARA"
It appears that the author, Dr. Luis Camara Dery was referring to Catmon, Iloilo, which is now called Santa Barbara, Iloilo.
On page 29, of the same book, "The Kris in Philippine History" written by Dr. Luis Camara Dery, and published in 1997, it also states that:
"THE MOROS DESTROYED THE TOWN OF CATMON AND ITS INHABITANTS MOVED TO OTHER TOWNS."
Does Sta. Barbara, Iloilo have a history of Moro Raids? Since the town is far from the seacoast, I doubt that it does have one.
Nevertheless, the idea that people from Cabatuan repopulated neighboring Sta. Barbara is interesting. If Santa Barbara was indeed abandoned by its inhabitants in the 1750's, although maybe for reasons other than Moro raids, and people from Cabatuan repopulated Santa Barbara, then many, if not most, of the people of Santa Barbara are related by blood to Cabatuananons dating back to the 1750's.
On the other hand, it is worth noting that the town of Catmon, Cebu is located along the seacoast and has a history of Moro raids. Can it be that Dr. Luis Camara Dery had mistaken Catmon Cebu with Catmon Iloilo?
Based on what is written on page 104 of the book "The Kris in Philippine History" I believe Dr. Luis Camara Dery has a good source material on the destruction of Catmon Iloilo. If so, then what caused the destruction of Catmon Iloilo if it wasn't due to Moro raids?
Dr. Luis Camara Dery, by the way, is a respected National Historian and professor of Philippine History.
